Mabadiliko No More Stigma Campaign
Mabadiliko’s anti-stigma campaign addresses the dark cloud of mental health stigma that hangs over the black community. Isolation, worsening mental health, and living in fear and shame are all the damaging results of stigma. The social media campaign targeted towards the black community in Lewisham was organised as an attempt to correct misconceptions and negative attitudes with awareness and truth. I collaborated with the company's social media assistant and graphic designer on the campaign. The tone is authoritative when addressing detrimental misconceptions, whilst compassionate when discussing solutions.

It’s like drifting further and further away from shore, and land feels like a distant hope. The fear of being blamed and shamed for being caught in the storm is more terrifying than the black waves that grow taller and stronger. So we just do our best to hold on, flailing helplessly as water starts flooding our boat.
This is what it can feel like for black people struggling with their mental health. Black people are up to four times more likely to be sectioned in mental health institutions and have the most dismal mental health statistics of any other race. Enough is enough. Stigma continues to cause so much tragedy and pain. If we want to see our community healing, thriving and fulfilling their unlimited potential, we must break the stigma together.

It’s human nature to be solution-oriented - especially when someone we love is struggling. Even though we may have good intentions for giving advice, it isn’t always helpful. It can make people feel as though they aren’t being heard, further making it difficult to open up and be vulnerable. Listening is more than enough.
Offer up your time. Ask your loved one if there is anything you can do to support them. For example, picking up the kids or doing shopping. A little goes a long way in making someone’s life easier.
Don’t just say it, get involved. It’s so easy to advise from the outside looking in, and we take a lot for granted. It can be really tough for people who are struggling to do the things they need to do to get better. This is where you can come in and join them in improving their wellbeing. For example, getting some exercise once a week by walking in the park together. Joint activities help hold people accountable and can make things a lot less daunting.

From quitting smoking to learning a new language, New Year’s resolutions are usually about reaching personal goals. How many times do we think about the ways we can be a better brother, cousin, daughter or friend to our loved ones? Let’s make 2023 the year of showing up and putting mental health first. Not just for us, but for everyone we care about.

The problem is that there are so many misconceptions and disapproving attitudes towards mental health in our community. The good thing is that the black community has the strength and resilience to do the work. We’ve always been proactive in creating effective solutions for ourselves. We’ve simply got to challenge stigmatising behaviours, understand where they come from and learn how to best show up to support ourselves and others with mental illness. We must demolish the barriers of shame, fear, and judgment so we can do the work.
